Does anyone go for a fast drive just for fun?

    Aug 28, 2008 1:53 PM

does anyone go for a blast and burn a tank of fuel, just for fun, and if you do, whereand in what?

I do.  A combination of Essex and Kent A and B roads.  Z4M.  Better than golf.

Occasionally.  My old Merc's not really fast enough for a proper burn - I like just picking a direction and seeing what's there...  Try to aim for the sea usually.  It's a worthy destination. The ability to just explore is one the best things about owning a car for me.

I used to, but I get fed up with being thwarted.

There are some brilliant lanes and driving roads around Essex and Kent, but due to the ever increasing traffic, they are becoming populated with numpties.

Tend to find a treck in to deepest East Sussex rewards like no other.

Yes fantastic. I take the mother in laws 02 Puma, some of the back roads round the Wirral are fantastic, great scenery and lovely views over the coast and Dee Estuary.

Caeser ruled with an iron hand, then with a wooden foot and finally with a piece of string.

I do, but my version of "fast" is actually not that fast, just a lot faster than when I have wife and baby in the car!  In the old days when I used to test cars our company used to use the Bedford proving ground which allows you to really tear around like a maniac in anything from a Proton Savvy to a Lambo Gallardo!  Most stable car on the high speed bowl - seriously - was the Fiat Croma.  I save up for track days when I can, not in my own car but go-karting, Palmer sport type of stuff, etc...  Actually prefer off-roading now.  Gaydon Heritage Motor Centre has a great little track and four new Transit-engined Defenders.  Interesting to see them plough through everything in second gear - no brakes - whilst supposedly capable Cayennes on off-road tyres get stuck!

In a word - yes. When I lived in the UK, Wales was always a hot spot, but these days there are some fantastic roads around the outside of Sydney. Also the Great Ocean Road.

Absolutely yes. Sometimes during the summer I'll set my alarm clock for 7:30 on a sunday morning and head out for an hour on the quieter roads in north hertfordshire before anyone else is up. I also do it during the day if the weather is nice and it takes my fancy.

It's not always a fast drive either, sometimes it's nice just to go for a cruise. Even when I was a student and all I had was a 1.3 micra I used to go for a drive from time to time. It's nice to head out with no idea where you are going, get totally lost, then try to find your way home. Once ended up on a farm track that just stopped in the middle of a field!

Interestingly, I did, just about an hour ago. I took my BMW 120D Sport to get fuel. I live in Northern Ireland approx.15miles from Eire where I get my diesel for around £1/litre (up yours Darling).

Normally my wife goes with me and I drive within the limits letting the torque row me along in 6th gear. However, she is on holiday at the moment and without being over zealous I decided to change down for bends and blat out the other side. I know the road well as it winds it way for about 2 miles with Lough Erne on one side and cliffs on the other. The sight lines are good there was no holiday traffic today.

What a revelation. With off-camber corners, fast left-right combos and short wind-her-up straights it was fantastic. I have driven the road for 7 years and never had an experience like it. I shot out the far side onto a mile straight and was surprised to find myself doing lets say, ahem, JUST over the legal limit....for Silverstone.

    Glorious.

One of my favourite drives is from home to my mate's farm.

Go to google maps, get directions, then A) Sydney B) Nevertire. The drive can be done in just under six hours, and you see all types of country side (plus the 'roos and the road trains).

Duendin to Queenstown, NZ is an amazing drive. Loads of varied scenery, usually all four seasons worth of weather in a single day, scenery from mountains to waterfalls to arrid rock-strewn landscapes, no safety barriers on the roads and spookily few other vehicles.

Anyone remember that 'Night Driving' advert that VW put out a few months ago? It featured a Golf GT and some chap driving around a city at night. VW produced a tie-in website where you can enter your post code and get a selection of really good driving routes - anyone know what it was? Can't find it and would like to revisit it.
