    should massa win the championship?

    Oct 02, 2008 10:13 PM

this may seem like a pretty stupid suggestion, but doesn't Massa deserve to win this year.  I guess a few people are up in arms at what i have just suggested but hear me out.  I think that Massa is going to leave ferrari in a few years and this might just be his last chance to get some glory.  I also think that Massa is one of the best and most humble drivers out there and dont you think that Hamilton has got it all to come.  I mean that Massa may not get another chance and Hamilton has got his whole F1 career in front of him.  Perhaps im wrong, id love to hear some other peoples opinion.

    Massa winning the championship?

Well, Massa has now had 3 goes at driving Sutil off the road and still yet to manage it, ruined his race yes – but yet to hit him   At least Kimi did it at Monaco, something about not seeing him.  Maybe that’s the problem.  When he achieves that goal maybe he will be able to go on and win a championship.

Massa humble?  He stated clearly that because Sutil is a lesser driver than him he should always defer to him?  That’s being humble..............

If he wins by more than 6 points and incurs some questionable penalties whilst doing so he might even deserve to win it. Massa may well be humble, but his dad seems to more than make up for it...

On a personal basis, yes I would like to see Massa win.  I think he is an under rated driver that has matured well over the years.  You do have to feel sorry for him as Hamilton the whipper snapper has come along and taken the lime light.  Massa on the other hand has got on quietly with the job in hand and stuck in some decent performances.

I will agree that he has made mistakes, and there have been on track incidents, but that is racing.

Does he deserve to win?  Definitely

In my opinion Massa doesn't deserve it. His performances this year have been either brilliant or rubbish, lacking in the consistency that you need to be Champion. We saw at Singapore that he went to pieces after the fuel incident. Lewis isn't the perfect driver but he has shown that in circumstances where things have not gone his way he has just got his head down and pulled out the best result possible (Monza '08 being a recent example). In the end it's that sort of mindset that wins titles.

On another note, I don't want to re-open the whole Spa penalty debate but if Massa and Ferrari can't win it even with some fairly biased FIA decisions in their favour then they will never win it. I'm not really interested in the whole politics thing and wish the FIA would just butt out and leave the teams to get on with it but I must admit that Ferrari do have a habit of moaning when things don't go there way. I noticed an article on BBC sport where Luca di Montezemolo has hit out at the Singapore GP saying that it's a 'circus'. I don't suppose he would feel that way if they had scored a one-two?

For what it is worth, as drivers, Massa and Hamilton have had very similar seasons.  Bearing in mind Massa had two retirements due to engine failure (and another due to brain failure) the fact that he is only seven points behind Hamilton gives him the edge.  Hamilton having just the one retirement.

It's hard to judge what kind of car Massa was driving after his refueling issue at Singapore.  But given he had to sit at the end the pit lane for an age (in F1 terms) and had to do a drive through, I'm amazed he even bothered to finish at all.  I can think of other drivers that wouldn't have bothered.  Hamilton does show more signs of brilliance though, and the seven point margin should be enough to see him through.

On that point, this "only needs to come second to Massa" nonsense spouted by "pundits" needs to be knocked on the head.  If Hamilton doesn't put in the wins, but he and Massa end up with the same points, Massa will take it with more wins (and he doesn't actually need to win again, just take seven more points than Hamilton).

He didn't say that.  Read it again.

He would have had a warm glow all over, no doubt, but di Montezemolo is a long-standing critic of street circuits, (and was moaning about Singapore before the race) reinforced now because of the issues around the intervention of the Safety Car; made all the more likely on such circuits.  Singapore is a cracking circuit though, and should stand alone as a night time event.  Not perfect, but much better than Valencia, which, with the exception of turns 8 to 10 (accross the bridge) is an incoherent, yawn fest.  Don't see it lasting very long.

It doesn't matter who deserves to win the title. The man who scores the most points is the rightful champion. All Massa has to do is just that!
