    Autocar help needed - BMW E30 M3 survivers

    Jul 28, 2008 7:15 PM

    Years ago Autocar did a feature called something like ' Great cars dying out '. Basically, there was a list of great drivers cars and the number of how many were registered in the UK. There was a mock picture of a hunter with the car in some rifle sights, you get the idea. Anyway, can someone tell me how many BMW E30 M3's survive in the UK now ? Should be interesting to the number printed years ago in the feature, this was before the prices dropped and every man and his dog were importing M3's from Germany to the UK,so I'm expecting the number to have risen. Myabe the feature should be brought back ?

    Thanks

    Sorry, can't answer your question for what remains now, but I have a book simply called "BMW 3 Series" by  Jeremy Walton which gives the following UK figures for the E30 M3 from 1987 to 1990;

    M3 - 211

    M3 Cabrio - 32 (1989 - 1990)

    M3 Evo - 38 (all 1990)

    The book claims the figures are the official approved import figures via BMW (GB), and that for the M3 expect the total figure to be double when taking into account unofficial / personal imports.

    Thanks for replying. I've seen those figures before, but so many M3's were imported in the late 90's that the figure most have risen quite substantially for a while.Of late though, many have been broken for spares, turned into track cars and even exported back to Germany and other countries. Just wondering how many still survive here in the UK.

    Have you tried any of the BMW enthusiast websites...I'm sure there will be someone that knows?

    For example, there is a guy on the ZRoadster forum who runs a register of all Z3M Roadster and Coupes, and if they exist he certainly knows about them.

    There must be someone out there that has a similar record of E30 M3s.

    Try, http://www.bmwcarclubforum.co.uk/forum/default.asp for starters.

    jeez, this is like one of those interview questions, a la "how many dogs are there in the UK?"  except the E30 M3 is of course not a dog...
