Kuga in the wild

Ed Keohane
I've just spent a weekend driving the new Ford Kuga in the Alps. It coped superbly with the winding Alpine roads over the moutains from Geneva to Courmayeur and it is genuinely stable with some fun adjustability on the throttle.

What was almost more revealing was its performance off the main roads. We watched a Land Rover Defender scramble its way up a very steep gravel track and then promptly set off after it.

OK, there wasn't ever going to be any doubt that the Landie would race up and go much further than we would, but belting up the slope after it brought home just how enabling a 4x4 SUV is for families with an outward-bound lifestyle.

It also reminded me how much easier it is to drive a car with traction control. In a big, old 4x4 you spend your time waiting as the knobbly tyres suddenly dig in and grip, then have to fight the locked differentials, which ruin the steering. With traction control and modern hybrid tyres, you simply point and squirt, and the car does the rest. And the ride's better.

All in all, I came away feeling that a new Kuga, fitted with a roof rack, could be the number one choice for a skiing holiday. And there'll be one in the showroom before the next snow fall.

Easier? Perhaps. But you can't mend it yourself Ed

Nice try to offset the impression that Autocar doesn't like soft-roaders Ed.  But don't bother.

If Ford was depending on "families with an outward-bound lifestyle" and not image-conscious, inconsiderate, over-financed school-run mums to buy this lump, it wouldn't last a year.

I can't see why the fact that a proportion of buyers don't use it's capabilities has to ruin the perception of soft roaders.  I live near Manchester and 3 out of every 5 Porsche 911's I see are driven by WAGs (complete with child seat in some cases) but no-one moans that most 911 drivers won't use more than 40% of the performance capability.

I have a new X-trail and tow 1500kgs with it and also use it for mild off-road towing (wet grass and gravel), something a non-heavy, non-4x4 just couldn't do.  It averages 37mpg (better than a lot of cars) and I like it.  So you car bigots can get lost.

In anyone regularly used more than 40% performance of their Porsche 911 they would lose their licence.

Driving a soft roader there is a good match between the law and the vehicles capabilities.

Having borrowed a 911 for two months on returning from abroad and fitting a young family of four (sometimes five) into it I had to convince myself that we could not carry on with one indefinitely. Looking down at the speedo after overtaking a few cars on an uphill section of three lane road  I realised that using that performance day-to-day would land me in serious trouble.

It has not convinced me to buy a soft roader as I value top drawer handling even without the performance of a 911.

I glanced at one the other week (are they even out yet?) and thought it looked hideous. But then I don't venture off road (other than grass or gravel) or tow, so don't need/desire/have a soft-roader. Lucky for those for who they're an ideal car due to the popularity of them.

I cant imagen any of you saying anything nice about any car.

With wags, its the fact that they drive their kids to school, not what car they drive, that should make us angry.

The Kuga only comes in a diesel at the moment and they average 40mpg, I should now I have one.

I think they look great, no not great fantstic in fact.  And for what I do it ticks all the boxes.  Talking of boxes why dont all of you get off yours and try the thing before you slag it off!!!  Its a great car to drive compaired to whats out there.
