The £16k Audi R8

Jamie Corstorphine

Driving to work today, stuck in the usual traffic jam, I glanced across to find the bloke in the lane next to me was driving an immaculate Honda NSX.

These days the NSX is a rare sight indeed. Few enough were sold in the first place, mostly because people couldn’t quite fathom the idea of spending £70,000 on a Honda, regardless of Ayrton Senna’s role in its chassis development. And nowadays most of the survivors have gone into the deep hibernation that comes with quasi-classic status.

But it’s still a hell of a car. Back in the day it was good enough to win our Handling Test for two years on the trot. And now – thanks to its rarity and unarguably well-executed design – it still looks fresh and arresting.

This one was wearing a tasteful private plate, and it occurred to me that you could park it next to its nearest modern equivalent, the Audi R8, without shame. Once I got to the office a quick scan of the net showed several for sale under the £20K barrier, and one particularly sweet-looking example up for just £16,000.

Admit it, you’re tempted.

About Jamie Corstorphine

Left a city job to be a road tester in 2004; other signs of madness include perpetual chirpy optimism and good humour. Used to drive a mossy Ford Granada 2.8; he's better now.

Definitely tempted but it would have to be a face lift version at lease (like the one in the article picture with the fixed head lamps) and these cost considerably more than £16K.  Shame.

Mind you, if a good Type R was to come up I may have to give the bank manager a call!

Is there any better game than heading onto the internet and seeing what you can buy with a fantasy budget? I play at least 3 times a week but still didn't realise an NSX can be had for £16k - that'll get you deserved respect from proper car enthusiasts.

For all it matters, I second Teg... I too play Phenerg's phantasy money Autotrader/car Pistohead classifields game at least 2-3 times a week...

Teg is right though... You coudl get into an NSX for as low as 12k, BUT... they are knackered...

Unlike Honda n general , they do not take hard driving abuse as well as say a 911 (pre 996 obviously)..

I have gone to see quite a few at some point 3 years ago as I was really keen to get one for 15ish... I saw abt 8 in 2 months and gave up.. Its the same with sub 20k Porsche 993's.... Just not good enough...

In both counts one needs abt 25k to be safe I reckon...

Funny you mention the R8 Jamie; as the lucky owner of a '95 manual NSX when I first drove the R8 it struck me that here was the NSX reinvented:

Supple enough to be useable on typically broken British B roads, great driving position with the major controls 'just so', super balance of power/grip & a friendly, approachable demeanour to its chassis. And top-notch build quality.

NSX's are amazing value these days & I could see bona-fide UK manual values rising in the next couple of years... they really are a fantastically useable everyday supercar. Gladly "theop" is way off WRT comments about them not taking hard driving - there are plenty of 100k mile+ examples out there and Stateside NSXPRIME website has owners with 250k miles+ on the original engine. Good maintainance is the key, as with any car.
