From Two Jags to No Jags

Ed Keohane
It wasn't long ago that an aspiring Deputy Prime Minister might have  a Jag for work and a spare in the garage. But the tide is turning.

Despite Gordon Brown's promise to swap his government Vauxhall for a hybrid - a Toyota Prius - he understandably balked when push came to shove, and opted for a V8 Jaguar XJ instead.

But the new breed of cabinet minister has definitely taken the petrol-electric route. According to this article in the Guardian,  James Purnell, Douglas Alexander, Ed Miliband, Hilary Benn (unsurprisingly for an environment secretary), Hazel Blears and John Denham all drive hybrid Toyotas or Hondas.

It's probably just as well, because the prime ministerial Jag is no ordinary 35mpg XJD, it's a 2.7-tonne armoured XJ. I've never driven one of these, so it's difficult to get any real economy figures, but Richmond-based Carty Associates, which provides a secure limo and driver service, reckon that an armoured XJ will do around 12mpg in town.

Oh yes, and it also has to be driven to the other end of the line for all those publicity-coup train journeys - that's not really saving fuel.

So when you're next getting stressed about reducing your carbon footprint remember that, unless you're commuting in a Bugatti Royale, things could be worse.

It could be A LOT worse. Consider what MPG Mr Bush gets out of Air Force One!

...and don't even mention the motorcycle outriders, the two or three Range Rovers full of security men etc.....or has Gordon Brown given up these "presidential" fripperies that his predecessor required to enhance his image as a world leader.

For god's sake who cares what the prime-minister drives as long as it's British. So what if it does twelve or ten or two to the gallon. I'd like it even more if he drove a new armoured Bentley that did 6 to the gallon and knocked cyclists off when it passed them with its wave of warm pollution,or an old Rover 3500 coupe perhaps. Now that would be cool. In admiralty blue I think. What I want to say is, stop whingeing all the blooming time you pious little bore and write something interesting for a change. Something INTERESTING !!!!!

As pigface pointed out at least it is British! I think it would have been even worse PR if he they had chosen a Toyota or other Japanese hybrid, just think how much carbon would have been expended shipping it from Japan, all the toxic metals in the battery packs and how slow it would have been when armoured as the PM's car now needs to be.

Oddly enough , I just passed Mrs B on the campaign trail here in Glenrothes as I walked down the shops for my lunch.
