Porsche Panamera: shock and awe

Steve Cropley

Despite the hype, the scoop pics and some judicious hints dropped over many months by Porsche, seeing the new saloon was quite a shock.

Porsche6 First, it was interesting to have it confirmed that this was indeed a Merc CLS and Maserati Quattroporte fighter, and nothing much to do with an Aston Rapide. Secondly, there are the interesting proportions of the car. Its width and lowness make ordinary exec saloons look like slices of a railway carriage.

Mind you, it's far from beautiful. Only a company with the brand power of Porsche could stretch its sports car cues quite so far. The low lines help, but you can't help thinking the rear looks too much like a Chrysler Crossfire, and that there are areas of, well, naivety about the thing.

It's imposing, not handsome. No doubts about the interior, though. My abiding impression of seeing the Panamera for the first time will always be of a superbly snug rear compartment lined on all sides with the most beautiful double-stitched tan leather, set off with top-quality metal details. This is a Bentley-level interior, the kind that makes things hard for everyone trying to sell a more expensive car.

No doubts about the dynamics either, although we didn't sample them. When Porsche engineers tell you a car will be exceptional to drive, you know you can believe it. Few big-note saloons will have an easy ride in tomorrow's market, but I reckon the Panamera's will be easier than most.

Steve, you are being kind.  Shock and bloody awe-full looking would have been a better title.

Unfortunately, when you are at this end of the market, it isn't good enough to just have a capable car anymore.  You need to have looks and ability!

What's not to like? It looks like a Porsche.

I have to say my first impression when I looked at it on the pic above was WOA! Great! Scanning through the rest of the file, I admit I was less impressed by the rear end - bit like Crossfire/Nissan 350Z as Steve mentioned...

I think I like it overall. Certainly looks better than the first marshmellowed sketches we had seen a year or 2 ago....

I am also fairly certain  that it will be a stonking drive (ability? check Teg) as all Porsches have always been. If they can combine assembly qualities a tick (or five) above 996 levels, then they ll have a winner.

If you think about it rationally, both of this car's competitors are different cars. The CLS is a beauty that will be getting old by end of next year and you 'll have a few posh minicab companies getting hold of them (already took a cab ride last week on a CLS).

The quattroporte in the meantime is a special car for special owners. More expensive to run, more unreliable and with assembly details that would get any german fitting engineer fired in no time. All Maseratis are like that. How they get away with it is beyond me.

Anyway, if I am in the lucky position to need a prime 4door sports saloon, I d definitely get a Panamera... Can't wait in fact to hear abt pricing and see the car in the flesh. They could even make an estate one day too!

Doomed...

Am I the only person to pick up on the Bugatti EB112 lines around the rear haunches and side profile of this car.  Look up a picture of the EB112, or better still Autocar, put a picture side-by-side for comparison.  I think it is uncanny.

It's not a good looking car to my eye, a CLS looks much nicer. Still it's more attractive than that abomination against nature that is the Cayenne - which itself is proof that a badly proportioned and ugly car can still sell.

Looks like an elephant sat on a Cayenne!

ooo dear...

what a bloaty toad of a car.

I'm convinced it will be a success though, as the power of the Porsche brand is like a blinding light to a lot of status-conscious people. I bet it drives well though.

Still Doomed...

HAHAHA At least we are having a laugh... At least we now know that the Cayenne looks better when flattened by an elephant!

Steve indeed is being kind, to Porsche of course. I suppose that means I'm saying he's kind of in Porsche's pocket, and indeed I think all the magazines are.

I know not one magazine will come right out a say it, really no one will want to offend Porsche...this car is wholly irrelevant, ugly, ungainly and literally made for only the widest roads etc. Only the most greedy bloated ceo's would be proud to call this their own. Myself, I would be embarrassed to no end driving in this bus. I think the Chairman of GM should have one and drive it to Washington.

i love this car and if  i had the money i would buy it, i mean there is nothing not to like about it just the back that looks like a hacth back but i still love this car. i saw a video on youtube of the spy vid and it sounds so good.i would give it a five star rating!!!!

Very nice design. Orifinal rear end does look a bit like that of the Crossfire , however at least its a change from the usual generic end.

give it time. i am starting to like that rear end more and more
