Taxing times

Vicky Parrott

You know the scenario. You’ve just bought a used car, and you’ve got the itch to drive it. But it’s not taxed.

Cue days of tense waiting around and glum looks at the static and as-yet-unexplored car in your drive, as the insurance company and Royal Mail move your precious insurance certificate aimlessly around the country.

I recently experienced exactly this bureaucratic nonsense after buying a Mercedes 190E recently, and in doing so discovered that it’s all totally unnecessary.

You can’t buy a tax disc in the Post Office until you have your official insurance certificate. But if you buy online – a very efficient and pain-free activity – the DVLA simply checks an electronic database that confirms whether you have (or haven’t) got insurance and an MOT.

But then you can’t buy online until you have the full V5 registration document or else your tax will be sent to the previous owner.

Now, I’m not questioning the fact that we should validate all these details, but surely in the electronic age the post office should be able to check the same online database for valid insurance and MOT, see your green slip in all its papery glory and then hand over your shiny tax disc?

Would that not be easier for everyone?

Silly question then Vicky, how did you get the car home and how did you do the photo shoot with the long term W124 in a car park if you didn't have any tax?!?!

You are right though, it is a painful task and one which should be almost instant in this electronic age.  I also get problems with my car as it is a personally owned vehicle on a fleet policy.  All legal and above board.  Get some jobs worth behind the counter though and you'd think I'd murdered someone!

I was waiting for that question.

I bought it on Friday 31st - the last day in October, which was the last day it was taxed.

Drove it home thinking (in my ignorance) that I would be able to tax it online and get the disc a few working days later, only to discover that I couldn't as I didn't have the V5 in my name yet. The result was that it took over a week to get it taxed and back on the road.

The photo shoot was done after it was taxed and I just took the disc out for the sake of the photo, which we do with most of our cars if it's possible. Did I pass investigation?

Well......  I'll let you off.  Chuckle.

Superb choice of car.  Can somebody in the office run an old BMW or Audi by way of comparison?  It would show pretty well who builds best.

The whole tax thing is madness - all the data is there - you could be given a code when your insurance goes through that enables the process to go through.  Also the scenario you got caught up in is very common - I've bought a few untaxed cars - The temptation to drive them is very strong - especially if you need to.
