Lotus has the answers

Chas Hallett

Good to see that one company has something positive to say about its finances. Lotus has just posted some pretty encouraging results, mainly because its engineering consultancy business is booming.

So is this a sign that the rest of the car-making world is finally seeing thing in Lotus's way? After all, they've been promoting lighter, more fuel-efficient cars for years. And now that is just what everyone else is trying to develop.

Hethel is also doing good work in helping others with hybrids and alternative fuels.

Don't forget too, that for other companies outsourcing R and D to the likes of Lotus is often a quicker and cheaper solution than doing something in-house.

So has Lotus (finally) got a cast-iron future?

I'd love to think that Lotus had a cast iron future, and judging by the weight of the Evora, it has.  (Sorry, but I just had to).

Seriously, the company has, since the early 1970's found a way of producing the wrong car, the shining exception being the first Elise.  Having rediscovered the magical formula they have strayed away from it consistently ever since, apart from the specialist 2 Eleven.

Hopefully, the latest results doesn't encourage them to drop the car production in search of higher profits though, because sometimes they get it so right it hurts.

Lotus has a name in R&D with regards to setup and handling... Probably the best name in the world on that matter....

Its fantastic for them, but they ve worked hard to keep it that way when they could have gone the popular way and start making saloons and volume cars... the way Porsche is quickly becoming (especially with the mega sales crisis that is coming upon them as all their models will be affected by recession)...

Saying all that, I still have to say that my Mk2 Elise was the most unreliable and shoddy piece of car kit ever.... Great drive though (wenn things were not falling off)...
