Bond's Aston action

Chas Hallett
I watched the new Bond film last night. I'm no film reviewer but it seemed pretty good to me - the usual high octane stuff and lots of car action, mainly courtesy of the Aston DBS.

Of course part of the interest of Bond films these days is to spot how many product placements they can shoehorn in. But surely the Aston deal is the ultimate product placement of any film ever?

Aston Martin DBS

That DB5 in Goldfinger has forever made us associate the secret service's finest with Astons. In fact, without this strong tie and the associated aura would Aston even have survived until now?

Bond saved Aston. It's worth discussing anyway.

Okay, I'll be honest. I think Astons are the most desirable cars in the world, and a small but significant portion of that desire is the Bond association (although mostly the drop-dead gorgeous styling).

When I buy my first Aston I may just develop a taste for Vodka Martinis.

Indeed..... My only problem owning one would be the perception of unreliability...  or the reality rather  ( i know a handful of banker/owners, city drivers and the db9 is a disaster)...

ahh and the small matter of 60k to get a decently used one....

Nice but all Gt type motors are too big and heavy. The DB4, 5 & 6 were 3,8 to 4.4 litres as were many others but the weight, length and width were more sensible. They could be used fairly hard on B roads knowng they were not too wide when they met another vehicle on leaving the corner.

This is one of the things which killed the front wheel drive elan.

Lack of weight and size also made them a better every day car.
