Ford Ka: under the hood

Chas Hallett
Hang on a minute. The new Ka diesel has the same engine as a Fiat 500 diesel which has the same engine as the Corsa diesel. So a Ford and Vauxhall now have the same engine.

Can anyone remember if that's happened before?

In days thankfully long gone Ford&BEDford used the same Perkins Engine in Transit&CF Vans as did many other manufacturers as volumes increased most with mixed fortunes went on to develop their own creations.Remember Fords YORK?Bedfords Opel based units? How things have changed.

Well remembered about the Perkins diesel. Of course, with the massive costs of engine development we should be getting used to it again. The Hyundai-Kia 2.0-litre petrol engine is more or less the same engine as in a host of Mitsubishis, Chryslers and Dodges for instance. Not to mention the Ford/PSA and PSA/BMW tie-ups. BMW and Merc have also announced future plans to develop big capacity petrol engines together.

The same 1248cc MJTD / CDTi / TCDi is also found in the Suzuki Swift, and of course Lancia Ypsilon and Musa. I agree about the development costs making engine sharing an option. The future could hold a time where you don't have to sacrifice having an all-round good engine for an all-round ideal car: the best of both worlds.

Be interesting to see who does the cheapest servicing, and what the excuses will be for the differentials in price!

Well said TegTypeR, would be nice to see the magazine do an article on comparisons for the numerous "platform sharers" we have already. Why not start with the Vectra, 9-3 , Caddy BLS trio.

Monk - My guess is that they would ALL come last place.

Quattro369 October 31, 2008 8:55 AM

A rival Mag did a feature like this actually: A3/Golf/Leon/Octavia. With a budget of about £16k they bought the best model they could in each range and compared them. Cant remember what order they came in but the Audi wasn't 1in st place.

...1st place
