And the world’s daftest car name is…

Andrew Frankel

Fiat’s new Fiorino Qubo has reignited my love of really silly vehicle names. I’m sufficiently sad even to have a list of the strangest (on which the Qubo now resides) but I wonder if anyone else may be able to add further to it?

Fiat10 Just to give you an idea of the standard, the Chrysler Imperial LeBaron doesn’t even get on the score sheet.

The Frisky Friskysprint is getting there but the real humdingers are all Japanese. A (very) small selection include the Suzuki Van Van (not that funny until you learn it’s a motorbike), the Isuzu Big Horn, Yamaha Pantryboy Supreme, Subaru Sambar Dias Astonish!! and Mazda’s holy trinity of the Bongo Friendee, Carol MeLady and Proceed Marvie Will Breeze.

They are eclipsed only by Mitsubishi with its quite extraordinarily funny Canter Guts and the unapproachable Mum 500 Shall we Join Us?

Will anyone take up the challenge? Cars, vans, bikes and concepts are all eligible. And if, in the meantime, anyone can tell me where I can find a Horsey Horseless, I’d be very much obliged.

About Andrew Frankel

Talents are limited to "driving cars and writing English." In 19th century France he would, therefore, have been stuffed; as it is, Andrew's the perfect Autocar road test writer.

I rescued a Frisky from a scrapyard when I was 15 (many years ago).  My dad hand painted it daytona yellow with black stripes down the middle and I sold it on to a mate.  Best car deal I ever did.

By the way talking of silly names the Stimpson Scorcher springs to mind - another crazy 3 wheeler.

I always thought the Plymouth Prowler sounded more like a rapist than a car...

Fiorino Qubo seems to be an appropriate name: it's funny and a little bit silly, just like the car. The other names you mentioned are real terrible names...

PS: this page looks terrible in every browser on a Mac. Firefox doesn't show the comment text box. Please do something for your website!

Am I missing something? How is Fiorino Qubo even slightly daft, let alone in the same league as Pantryboy Supreme or Canter Guts? It sounds like an Italian version of the Nissan Cube, and to my ears is a fitting name for a mobile cupboard with boxy looks. If I were you, Mr Frankel, I'd give up the Dexedrine...

Forget about the car names, Wankel powered has always made me smile like a schoolboy :)

Just as well they did'nt fit them to Willys

I always wondered is the Russian car Volga, describing itself?

From Japan, the land of the daft name, comes the Nissan range..

The clipper Rio, and the dualis, which sounds like some sort of performance drug for certain parts!

The Fairlady Z takes some explaining, as does teh Caravan Silkroad which is a minivan!

The Volga is a major Russian river.

A personal silly name favourite of mine is the Nissan Leopard J Ferie. Which just sounds like it should have its own rap video.
