Save the planet: buy a 22mpg BMW

Mike Duff

Where would motoring journos be without the BMW X6? We should give the thing some kind of award for the sheer amount of coverage we’ve already managed to wring out of it; everything from favourable comments on how it drives through to deep wonder at just how pointless the idea of an off-road coupe really is.

X6 Anyway, BMW has obviously grown used to the critical deluge, to the extent it’s decided to stir up yet more debate with a press release that makes the extremely bold assertion that the forthcoming range-topper, the X6 50i, is some kind of environmental champion.

That’s right, a car that manages the dizzying heights of 22.3mpg when put through the standard fuel economy test – and which pushes out 299g of CO2 for every kilometer it travels, is worthy of praise on the grounds that it does slightly better than its rivals.

According to BMW, the twin-turbocharged X6’s CO2 emissions figure is 75g/km cleaner than the supercharged Range Rover Sport and it’s 4.8mpg more fuel efficient. It’s also 2.3mpg more efficient and 33g/km less polluting than the Porsche Cayenne GTS.

All of which is undoubtedly true, but it seems like a seriously strange battlefield on which to base the 404bhp X6’s case. It’s like saying that an oilwell fire is more environmentally friendly than a capsized supertanker.

Let’s be honest, for the mid-ranking Premiership footballers who will form the range-topping X6’s most appreciative audience, green issues are what happen if the groundsman hasn’t done his job properly.

Couldn't agree more.

Besides, am I the only one who thinks thw X6's design is rubbish and that BMW has gone completely bonkers?

drivenfromtherearplease August 11, 2008 9:58 PM

Oh dear....

What complete tosh.

I may have said this before and I make no apologies on repeating myself here but what is the point?

Please someone out there tell me that you actually require a vehicle like this and if there is one then I pity you....

If you require one for the rough stuff buy a second hand defender / Patrol or Landcruiser and use it when needed!

Guess what you'll have change for hmmm lets see the choice here....oh its huge and fast and fun and far more economic!

The sooner cars lose the accessory phase the better - and these idiotic frankensteins can disappear.

I would like to propose a motion that all those that have bought, have put their name down or are considering one of these SUVs be banned from driving for good and made to travel the rest of their days on public transport at full cost to them.

Perhaps then we might see an improvement within the system and hey presto all those who don't like driving will then start to use a more efficient service and that would leave the roads less congested so all those who enjoy driving have less idiots on the road in which to enjoy the highway...

It'll never happen of course!

I'm not green either with envy or environmentalism - just flabergasted at the waste of talent, time and energy spent on developing these things.

I have to say i have been forced in to registering on here, purely because of this topic.

I am not a perticular fan of the X6 either, though having driven one (35d) i was impressed.

yes this car is huge, seats only 4 and aint all that easy on the eye. but the fact remains it is sold out! and that it is more efficent that its rivals! how is that a bad thing? No matter who bitchs about it i hope manufactures continue to build rediculous cars, beacuse it gives people a wonderful thing.....the ability to choose what they want!

I cannot see why the X6 is reciveing so much flack for being big and heavy, when the Range Rover Sport V8 got none of this an it is over 500kg HEAVIER!

I would personally not buy one of these, but i would not like to have the option of buying one taken away!

the moment a type of car is banned will be a dark day for us all, as soon to follow will be many many others, leaving your only choise a smart car, or a battery powered honda jazz. Not a future i relish personally!

i would also point out that this would cause Autocar to go out of business as there would be nothing to road test, and nothing of interest to read about.

on another note i bet BMW are loving this, the amount of publicity the X6 is getting, there is no such thing as bad publicity.

"...there is no such thing as bad publicity. "

Tell that to the X-type, or the makers of the MMR vaccene!

I keep seeing one of these cars pass me each day and i cannot believe how ugly it is, especially from the back.  It just goes to show how money and taste rarely go hand in hand.  Then again, what BMW does look good these days?

Vidge 123 August 12, 2008 2:47 PM

phenergn, ok you got me there! but i cant see that the X6's publicity is doing BMW any harm at all, quite the opersite.

good thing socialist don't rule the world or there would only be one of everything.

Beowolf August 14, 2008 3:39 PM

Thanks to previous debates here, I've kinda fluctuated.  One one hand, there's plenty of other fuel-guzzlers, and this IS a digital age where manufacturers can easily rejig their processes and whirl out any number of variations on a theme to produce highly targetted, super-uber-niche vehicles for the select in that genre, so everyone can be catered for.  So what's another big, fat car.  There will only ever be a ratio of one of these to every hundred Minis, so what's the fuss....?

On the other hand, though they may well be the best of the breed, it's a breed that needs completely different roads to the ones I travel in - central London - and beyond being a caged animal here, I also agree with Brooklands above, '...I cannot believe how ugly it is, especially from the back....'    It's sooooooooooo ugly, it makes your mamma look........

LGgeek August 14, 2008 10:55 PM

Beowolf , I will agree for London

it doesn't make sense but that is

true of a lot of cars. I'm sure the

Mini and other small cars work.

However here in the states we

have wide open spaces so this is

not an issue. After driving one of

these get use to what the back looks

like,it's about all you will see most

of the time.

Beowolf August 17, 2008 10:46 PM

LGgeek, true true.  I think I said in previous debates that possibly for some in America the X6 will be seen as 'downsizing', and another blogger made the excellent point that in other markets, such as the middle east, it's size and mpg will be irrelevant given the de facto car is a large 4 x 4.

London, like a handful of other metropolii, has its own unique problems.  Personally, I think the only sensible mode of transport here is a motorbike.  And I kid you not, I really like the idea of the new Toyota i-Real.  I think something like that can really work in inner cities....
