Verdict

 9 stars out of 10

Beyond the many individual triumphs scored by Mazda’s new baby, perhaps its biggest achievement is the presentation of a fresh alternative. Next to the established supermini elite – Corsa, Clio and Fabia – the Mazda 2 weighs some 150kg less, and while this pursuit of lightness has brought sacrifices in overall refinement, especially noise suppression, the benefits afforded in economy, performance, verve and comfort are compelling.

Not only does the 2 dust all rivals in a combined test of performance, economy and emissions, it delivers an alert, nimble and enjoyable drive long since missing from top-flight superminis. The chassis is well balanced, adjustable and teamed with steering that, for an electric set-up, is strong on feel.

While making its statement about the benefits of weight-saving, Mazda has been watchful to not slip up on any of the basics. The controls are well weighted, the packaging decent, and styling, to our eyes at least, neatly executed. Our only criticisms are of the interior finish, which doesn’t match the best in class, and the refinement over longer journeys.

The new Mazda 2 is not just a significant car then, but a really rather good one.
