Porsche’s replacement for the ageing 356 arrived in 1963. The rear-engined 2+2 concept was similar but the 911 gained two extra air-cooled cylinders and produced a heady 130bhp in standard trim. Additional higher-powered S versions were added in 1966 and sold alongside the standard car until the mid ’70s when the ‘S’ badge began two decades of retirement.
Careful evolution followed and a four-wheel-drive Carrera 4 hit showrooms in 1989. The air-cooled engine in the 993 breathed its last eight years later.
