Each set of three cylinders in the iron-block, 24-valve, in-line 2568cc six has its own intercooled Garrett turbocharger, and together they produce 277bhp and 271lb ft. But it’s what happens at the wheels that really interests. The Skyline has a part-time four-wheel drive system that puts handling first, directing power to the rear wheels until conditions demand otherwise, and four-wheel steering controlled by a small electric steering rack at the back. In a corner, the rear wheels initially steer in the opposite direction to the front wheels (oversteer), to sharpen initial steering response; then on sensing that the car has responded they steer the same way as the fronts (understeer), which sharpens the steering by taking up some rear tyre slip angle.
